Apartment for an art collector
The apartment is located on Avenida da Liberdade, a boulevard that connects the southern neighbourhoods of Lisbon to the north. Modelled after the boulevards of Paris, it is flanked by mature trees and is home to embassies, grand hotels and high-end retail. The buildings along the avenue take cues from Hausmannian architecture, and our client’s apartment is no exception.
However the original rooms boasting high ceilings, large windows and rich plasterwork and architectural details were partially obscured by recent alterations when we first found the apartment. Our primary goal was therefore to restore the original proportions and features, while at the same time, making subtle changes to accommodate a 21st century lifestyle. We set out to create a backdrop for the client’s collection of design pieces and contemporary art. As such, our interventions were subtle, allowing the 19th architecture and art collection to take centre stage.
